Fed’s Target 95MHz Wireless Spectrum for Mobile Broadband
Fed’s Target 95MHz Wireless Spectrum for Mobile Broadband
As per the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) 95MHz of government, wireless spectrum could be used for mobile broadband. But it has also recommended that government agencies and commercial users should share spectrum.
The agency which belongs to the U.S. Department of Commerce announced last week that 95MHz of government wireless spectrum could be freed for commercial use. The exact details of how and when this would occur and how much will it cost had not been discussed yet but the agency feels that it is possible.
Adding 95MHz of spectrum from the 1755MHz to 1850 MHz band is in line with President Obama’s vision of doubling the wireless spectrum used for wireless broadband by 2020.
Lawrence Strickling, NTIA administrator and assistant secretary for communications and information said that the report has set a path to put prime spectrum in wireless commercial broadband use as per the Obama administration’s goal of encouraging innovation and investment and increasing America’ s financial competitiveness.
The wireless industry is highly interested in the spectrum band identified by the NTIA. Big wireless operators like Verizon and AT&T feel that increasing wireless data services has created a capacity shortage and unless new wireless spectrum is not auctioned by the government there won’t be room in future for wireless companies to serve their customers.
Freeing 95MHz of spectrum won’t be soon or easy as it would take millions of dollars and at least a decade to move existing government users to a different band.
As per the NTIA currently over 20 agencies with over 3,100 individual frequency assignments are in this spectrum band. The Department of Defense handling highly critical missions like military communications, remote controlled robotics, air combat trainings and precision guided ammunition uses this band. The Law enforcement Department also uses this band for surveillance.
The government has freed spectrum in the past but current users had to be relocated to other frequencies which took a lot of time and money.

NetZero Rises From The Grave as Contract-Free Mobile Broadband Service
NetZero Rises From The Grave as Contract-Free Mobile Broadband Service
NetZero, which provided Free Internet to many Americans in the 1990s due to its cheap and free service plans, has reinvented itself as a contract free, low cost broadband mobile service provider.
NetZero’s latest services use 4G WiMAX networking. They include low cost as well as free monthly plans. The company’s mobile broadband services are available in over 80 cities including Washington D.C, Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. NetZero offers its users a WiMAX USB modem and a mobile hotspot for $49 and $99 respectively. Both devices do not need any contract and NetZero’s services for its standard plans could be cancelled any time. NetFlix has claimed users should expect up to 10 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps up speeds with both devices.
NetZero is planning to offer its subscribers a free monthly option similar to its free dial up connectivity days. But this option carries a maximum capping of 200 MB data usage. It would be available only for 12 consecutive months. Customers who upgrade to a different plan won’t be able to go back to the free plan. Larger tier includes the $9.95 and 500 MB data usage per month plan, $19.95 with a 1 GB data usage per month, $34.95 with a 2 GB data usage per month and $49.95 with 4 GB data usage per month.
NetZero does not charge for overage. When users hit their maximum data usage limit they can buy a top up or wait for the next month cycle to begin using the Internet. Subscribers will have the option of using 1 Mbps service to conserve data so that the maximum free usage limit is not breached or 10 Mbps service for maximum speed. Users can choose any one of the above options as per their current requirements. In case the requirements change they can switch between these two options any time.

Why Mobile Hotspots are a Must for Business Travelers?
Why Mobile Hotspots are a Must for Business Travelers?
By Dan Karas
With the rapid increase in the usage of mobile phone and smart phone users, there is a greater demand for mobile phone services that allow people to stay connected at all times. Today, many businessmen depend on hand held devices that offer Internet connectivity for quick and easy access of information. Technology has come a long way from the evolution of Bluetooth to the 3G and the 4G networks that are becoming commonplace today.
These days, hotspots have become extremely popular and they can practically be found everywhere ranging from public places such as coffee shops, bookstores and airports to some local towns and municipalities. At a very basic level, they refer to the ability to connect the Internet to a local wireless network. However, the same functionality can be shared using smartphones with the help of the right software and hardware support.
Mobile Hotspots are small wallet sized devices that utilize the wireless data service by using a built in router with the capability of transmitting data at higher speeds. Now, they can practically work anywhere depending on the network of your service provider with the ability to support up to 5 devices at the same time.
Many newer smartphones have mobile hotspot functionality built-in, you just run the hotspot app and connect your wireless devices via your smartphone to your cellular 3G of 4G Internet network.
Most business people who travel need to have instant access to the Internet for sharing vital business information with their clients and co-workers. However, places that provide wireless Internet access can be quite expensive and sometimes, data access and transfer may be relatively slow. In such times, it may be a good idea to have your own mobile hotspot that can provide wireless Internet access using a smart phone or even a laptop device. One of the benefits of using mobile hotspots is to that you can have wireless connectivity among multiple devices to ensure quick and efficient means of business communication.
3 top benefits of having your own mobile hotspot:
Easily accessible and convenient
By using mobile hotspots, you can just have a single device that allows you to provide connectivity to many other devices and offers greater functionality to the users. That means, now you can use your smartphone with a mobile hotspot to act as a wireless modem or router and access the plethora of information that is available on the Internet from practically anywhere that there is a cellular signal.
Quick sharing and retrieval of information
Now, mobile hotspots are capable of delivering higher bandwidth then older dial-up tethered mobile connections which make it suitable for receiving large amounts of data and information. Using the higher speed, you can easily download large business presentations and also have video conferencing support whenever required. There are many mobile service providers that enable you to tether your smartphone with different devices such as the laptop or the tablet. However, this may require a USB device or Bluetooth connectivity for your smartphone to act as a mobile hotspot and access instant information.
Portable and can be carried easily
Mobile hotspots can be very useful for frequent business travelers who need to stay in constant touch and share vital business information. Now, using a wireless network, you can easily ensure smooth connectivity using these mobile hotspots and send important updates and e-mails for effective business communication. As these devices are small and portable, they can be easily carried anywhere you travel and be used to access the Internet at your convenience.

How to Choose the Best Mobile Broadband Service Provider?
Choosing the Best Mobile Broadband Provider?
by Dan Karas
You could face a number of challenges while choosing the right mobile broadband service provider with so many options available today in the market. However, when it comes to using mobile broadband services, affordability and reliability are some of the key factors that you may have to keep in mind. With mobile broadband services offering the fastest way to access and share information, it becomes important to pay attention to find the right package that is both cost effective and offers the best quality of service.
Here are a few tips that you can use to make a smart decision on some good mobile broadband services:
Do a good deal of research
It makes good sense to find out various options that are available in the market today that offer high quality mobile broadband services. Gather information about different Internet service providers offering such services within your local region. Companies having a vast experience and expertise in this area may be able to provide some amazing deals on mobile broadband packages. You can even talk to customers to get views and suggestions regarding mobile broadband operators in your area.
Understand your mobile usage
There are multiple types of mobile broadband plans available today and you need to be careful while selecting the best one that meets all your needs. Else, you would be wasting money on purchasing something that would not serve the purpose of your communication. If you are a frequent traveler, then it may be a good idea to choose a plan that offers more network coverage. There are contract plans, pre-paid plans and short or long term services that are offered by various service providers.
Know the data transfer speed
Now, the main purpose of using mobile broadband services is to access data or information at a higher speed. In case the data transfer and the connectivity is too slow, then it may interfere with your business communication and affect your regular tasks. Again, it depends on the kind of activity for which you may be using the broadband services, especially if you need to access large amounts of data at a time. Hence, it is better to discuss these issues with your mobile broadband provider before opting for these services.
Must provide help and online support
Last but not the least, the mobile service provider must be reliable and offer different methods of communicating with them, in case you need to get in touch with them. In addition, it may be useful to look for providers that offer help and online support in the form of FAQ, online documentation and operating manuals that may be useful for the customers. Besides, it is important to choose the best service provider who may be able to quickly respond to customer queries and provide effective solutions to your problems.

Verizon Wireless Data Limit Changes
Starting on July 7th 2011 Verizon Wireless will be limiting 3g and 4g Internet usage by switching to a tiered plan. Users can choose from three data packages; 2 gigs for $30 per month, 5 gigs for $50 per month, or 10 gigs for $80 per month. Users who go over the limits on their data package will be charged an additional $10 per gigabyte.
Some sources hint that Verizon’s motive for offering the unlimited data plans to their customers was to seem more appealing to AT&T customers due to the fact that AT&T switched to tiered data plans earlier last year. Verizon needed to make the switch before the release of the Iphone 5. With Verizon getting rid of their unlimited data plans that leaves only Sprint and T-Mobile who have yet to switch, which may seem appealing to disgruntled Verizon customers, but with T-Mobile’s planned merge with AT&T Sprint will likely switch to a tiered plan sometime this year.
The typical unlimited data plan for Verizon smart phones is around $30 per month, the same price as their new 2 gigabyte data plan. The Verizon customers who will be hit hardest are those who use their cell phones for business, including E-mailing and downloading large attachments. This is due to the fact that the largest plan Verizon will offer is $50 more expensive than the unlimited data plans most users have currently.

3G vs 4G Mobile Broadband
3G vs 4G is a popular question that we have been receiving lately from visitor feedback at ISP 1. People want to know what the differences and advantages are between the newer 4G or fourth generation technology and the existing 3G third generation system.
The following video does an excellent job of explaining the differences between the various 3G – 4G Wireless Mobile Broadband technology. It will explain how we got to where we are today and what the future of wireless broadband looks like.
WiFi or Moble Broadband – What’s the Difference?
What’s the difference between mobile broadband and WiFi? This is a question that ISP 1 readers often ask.
The truth is these are two completely different technologies, even though they both are wireless.
Mobile Broadband
Cellular phone providers such as Verizon, At&t, Sprint and others offer mobile broadband. Using mobile broadband you can get high speed Internet access practically anywhere that has 3G or 4G cell service. The cost is about $20 to $60 a month depending on the type of device you’re using. Mobile broadband is very convenient for business users or frequent travelers. It gives you the flexibility and freedom to work from pretty much anywhere you like. However, it does have some drawbacks. Most cellular providers impose monthly bandwidth limits of 5 GB or less and charge hefty overage fees. The speed is also not near as fast as your typical home DSL or high speed cable Internet connection.
WiFi Internet
WiFi is a trademark of the WiFi Alliance. WiFi enabled devices communicate with wireless routers or access points sometimes called “hotspots”. To receive WiFi Internet access, you must be within range of one of these hotspots. WiFi has a very limited range of a few hundred feet or so. This can be extended with overlapping access points, to cover a area such as a college campus. You can connect your broadband DSL or high speed cable Internet to a wireless router at home to provide broadband Internet to all of your wireless Internet enabled devices.
Free WiFi
Free WiFi is available in some areas such as airports, college campuses, coffee shops, book stores, hotels, and restaurants. You must be within range to receive the service and possibly need to provide login credentials on secured WiFi networks.

3G Wireless Internet – What’s 3G All About?
Today, people are enjoying all different types of Internet connections. 3G wireless Internet is a perfect choice for those frequently on the go. Alternatively known as mobile broadband, 3G or third generation Internet it is a rather fresh new technology providing both convenience and flexibility. Prior to spending your money, there are a few terms you need to understand. EVDO, which stands for Evolution Data Optimized or Evolution Data Only, is one of them.
It refers to a 3G technology that generally offers download speeds of between 600 to 1400 kilobytes per second. Companies such as Verizon and At&t use this technology. If you’ve ever heard of HSPA or the 4G-network service, then you won’t have problems understanding what EVDO is all about. It is a form of cellular Internet offered via cell phone networks. This explains the reason why the service is only available in areas that have adequate mobile phone network or signals.
Are you thinking of trying a mobile broadband connection today? – If the answer is yes, there are a few options available.
The first choice is a USB modem, which is a tiny gadget that you connect to a laptop USB port. For instance, one can buy an EVDO modem.
A wireless mobile hotspot is another 3G Internet device that acts like a 3G wireless router. It connects your laptop or desktop computer to high speed Internet via a wireless connection.
A mobile data card, otherwise called a broadband data card is the third option. f you have to choose it make sure that your notebook has the proper interface card slot, either PCMCIA on older laptops or the newer ExpressCard slot.
Now that you know a little more about 3G Wireless Internet, the following guidelines will help you pick the most appropriate 3G service provider.
• High Speed Connection – whether you choose expensive or cheap 3G Internet, high speed must be your top consideration. If you are a web designer, you will certainly require a top speed connection for uploading and downloading large files. If your work is not very complex, mobile broadband service is perfect.
• 3G Modem Options – If you want cellular Internet to work for you, consider choosing the best modem. There are many modem providers in the US, including US Cellular, AllTell, Sprint. At&t and Verizon among others. It will be best if you could find product reviews and read them keenly.
• Cellular Signal Strength – Although each provider will state this on the advert, it is your duty to find out. Previous users are the only people who can guide you through this. Therefore, you have to search for related reviews and testimonials. You might find out that the signal strength is not very reliable in your locality and vice versa.
• Cost Of Service – 3G wireless Internet is currently not the Cheapest Broadband Option. But the portability is a big plus and it’s affordable. Due to the immense competition in this market, you should be able to compare numerous 3G offers. Some wireless providers will give you a chance to test their services on a trial basis.

Verizon Wireless 3G Mobile Broadband Options
If you’re like me, you don’t want to be without a high speed Internet connection when you leave home. Many cellular phone companies, such as Verizon Wireless, provide a 3G Internet option that works anywhere you have a cell signal.
Verizon offers several ways to connect your laptop, netbook or other Internet capable device to the Internet. I will briefly describe the most common methods of providing 3G Internet.
Verizon’s MiFi Portable 3G Internet Hotspot:
I have personally used the Verizon MiFi to provide high speed 3G Internet service to my laptop and my wife’s netbook while I traveled. The MiFi is a portable wireless 3G Internet router and can provide broadband Internet access to up to 5 wireless Internet capable devices. It is tiny, about the size of a half a deck of cards, and has a rechargeable battery. Wireless setup was easy and the MiFi performed flawlessly. The cost for the data plan in 2010 was about $60 for 5 Gigabytes of data usage per month.
Verizon 3G Internet Smart Phones:
You can use any of Verizon’s 3G smartphones to provide Internet access to your laptop or possibly other wireless Internet devices, depending on the capabilities of your specific 3G smartphone. Several of the latest smartphones have 3G mobile hotspot capabilities. Three popular choices are:
- Motorola Droid X
- Samsung Fascinate
- Palm Pre Plus
I presently use the Palm Pre Plus because Verizon offered me a free 3G mobile hotspot package deal for as long as I keep the phone. The other mobile hotspot capable phones vary in what Verizon charges for the hotspot feature.
Most mobile broadband plans have a monthly data limit of 5 gigabytes or less and have heavy overage charges. I have never come close to going over my bandwidth limit. However, if you do a lot of heavy downloading, you should monitor your Internet usage closely.
Even if your smartphone doesn’t have mobile hotspot capabilities, it can still be tethered via a USB cable to your laptop or netbook to provide 3G Internet access. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone or have had your existing phone plan for a couple of years or more, you may be able to get one of the newest 3G Internet provider smart phones for next to nothing. Verizon and most other cellular Internet providers offer huge discounts and rebates when you sign a new contract.
