AT&T Wins 4G Crown: WiMAX Worse Than 3G
AT&T Wins 4G Crown: WiMAX Worse Than 3G
In the latest survey published by PCWorld magazine last week, AT&T was then named as the best 4G carrier and T-Mobile USA the best 4G carrier beating rivals like Verizon and CenturyLink. The survey also highlighted that WiMAX was falling way behind its LTE rivals.
The survey found that amongst all wireless carriers AT&T had the best download speeds although Verizon’s LTE service did score better for upload speeds. In the 3G category, T- Mobile USA’s HSPA + 21 Mbps which in fact the carrier markets as 4G staved off stiff competition from its rivals.
T- Mobile USA’s HSPA + 42 Mbps fared surprisingly well against established 4G providers. The survey found out that the carrier’s plans were more transparent, cheaper and flexible as compared to other carriers surveyed.
Verizon was the first to offer LTE services but due to this download speeds with Verizon’s LTE are slower than AT&T which started its LTE service much later. 3G speeds aren’t showing any improvement compared to previous years with Verizon’s focus being primarily on increasing next gen coverage. That has helped the carrier in terms of service accessibility. Its 4G service is more accessible than its competitors.
WiMAX has started showing its age. It was the first to announce the 4G label but it fared even worse than its 3G service providing rivals in most cities covered under the survey.
PCWorld drew its conclusions from the survey with a suggestion for users who frequently download to check for coverage maps for Verizon and AT&T and opt for AT&T if they have coverage in their area as it has better download speeds than any internet service provider in the U.S. Uploaders can use Verizon’s service for its fast upload speed. In terms of cheap billing Internet subscribers can switch to T-Mobile USA which has more convenient billing plans.
NetZero Rises From The Grave as Contract-Free Mobile Broadband Service
NetZero Rises From The Grave as Contract-Free Mobile Broadband Service
NetZero, which provided Free Internet to many Americans in the 1990s due to its cheap and free service plans, has reinvented itself as a contract free, low cost broadband mobile service provider.
NetZero’s latest services use 4G WiMAX networking. They include low cost as well as free monthly plans. The company’s mobile broadband services are available in over 80 cities including Washington D.C, Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. NetZero offers its users a WiMAX USB modem and a mobile hotspot for $49 and $99 respectively. Both devices do not need any contract and NetZero’s services for its standard plans could be cancelled any time. NetFlix has claimed users should expect up to 10 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps up speeds with both devices.
NetZero is planning to offer its subscribers a free monthly option similar to its free dial up connectivity days. But this option carries a maximum capping of 200 MB data usage. It would be available only for 12 consecutive months. Customers who upgrade to a different plan won’t be able to go back to the free plan. Larger tier includes the $9.95 and 500 MB data usage per month plan, $19.95 with a 1 GB data usage per month, $34.95 with a 2 GB data usage per month and $49.95 with 4 GB data usage per month.
NetZero does not charge for overage. When users hit their maximum data usage limit they can buy a top up or wait for the next month cycle to begin using the Internet. Subscribers will have the option of using 1 Mbps service to conserve data so that the maximum free usage limit is not breached or 10 Mbps service for maximum speed. Users can choose any one of the above options as per their current requirements. In case the requirements change they can switch between these two options any time.

Sprint Predicts Within Five Years M2M Will be Standard
Sprint launched its M2M (mobile to mobile) division running with WiMAX in hopes of a high profit, with an ARPU (average revenue per user) of about 10 dollars U.S. per month. According to Geoff Martin, Manager of Platforms and the Collaboration Center for Sprint’s M2M Business Unit, quotes “M2M is one of the most profitable customers we have.”
This M2M division is one of Sprints center focuses this summer along with many other similar competitors such as Verizon and AT&T. 400 non phone products, Sprint claims, are going to be able to run on their network. Though Sprint has several networks, Martin claims that the M2M WiMAX will be cheapest and create the most revenue.
Geoff Martin of Sprint predicts that this is going to be the new big thing. He said in an interview “There’s not too much with an electrical current running through it that will not be wirelessly enabled in future.” He went on to predict, “In five years’ time you won’t be able to buy a digital camera that won’t give you a way of uploading your photos to Facebook…. Every single auto manufacturer will be coming out with one flavor of M2M.”
